A military spokesman says supersonic jets hit positions where the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam maintain a hidden airfield. He says a Tiger military training facility was targeted by the air force, but had no details of casualties.

In ground battles at Vavuniya, the military lost seven soldiers with 31 wounded while the Tigers suffered heavy casualties.
