NATO may increase ops against pirates

NATO is considering stepping up its anti-piracy operations, including an extended mission off the coast of Somalia and more authority for fleet commanders to detain pirates.
The western military alliance is reviewing plans to interrupt a four-ship anti-piracy mission tomorrow, amid a spate of attacks on merchant vessels in the Gulf of Aden sea lanes that handle a tenth of the world’s trade.
Combating piracy leapt toward the top of the U.S. agenda when American sharpshooters, acting on President Barack Obama’s orders, killed three pirates to free a U.S. ship captain taken hostage off Somalia’s coast last week.
